BACKGROUND Diabetes is a silent killer and cannot be reversed / cured once an individual becomes a confirmed case of diabetes. Published literature says that out of every 03 patients who are confirmed cases there are 4 more borderline cases who need to be monitored and educated so that do not become confirmed cases in the next 02 – 05 years. Therefore education, prevention and constant monitoring of the border line cases are a must. Bayer Healthcare a leading Diabetes Management company has joined hands with Exotic Echo to initiate steps to prevent people from becoming fully diabetic.
MISSION Exotic Echo has a mission to test a total of 02 crore individuals through out rural India in the next 6-8 years for their tendency for diabetes. In PHASE I of the project the aim is to screen 05 lakh individuals in North East India by 31 Dec 2010. PLAN Screen people by taking help of the network of self help groups and community leaders in the three states. The DIABETES screening programme commenced on the 06 Dec 2008 in Diezephe Village in Nagaland. The plan envisages doing the first test free for every person and the second test free for the individuals who are detected to have blood sugar levels above the acceptable levels. People will be charged a very affordable amount for subsequent tests. For individuals who do not have the capacity to pay will be tested free. The funds for free testing will be secured by income from paid testing, possession of glucose sugar monitoring machines by the screened population , member contributions and voluntary contributions from the people. Once the screening, detection and education programme model becomes successful, the plan is to showcase the model to Government and if absolutely unavoidable, secure a part of the health budget to distribute the monitoring system and do the testing for the needy people who cannot afford it.
